UL or CE — which applies

The mark follows the destination, not the design. Answer the three questions below to set the working market; the toggle in the title block carries that choice through every other section for this session.

Independent reference — not a UL, NFPA, or CENELEC publication. Written by a working controls engineer from public standards documentation, to help you navigate component selection. It certifies nothing and does not replace the standards themselves. Verify every component in UL Product iQ under its category control number, and every table value against the current published edition, before release. Full notice at the bottom of the page.

Where does the panel physically get installed and energized?

What is the panel's role?

Who is responsible for the conformity declaration?

UL

North America · third-party certification
Legal basisOSHA requires NRTL-certified equipment in US workplaces; NEC 409 and the AHJ govern the installation. Not an EU-style directive — enforcement is at inspection.
Who certifiesAn NRTL (UL, ETL/Intertek, CSA, TUV). A panel shop holds a UL 508A listing and applies the label under a Follow-Up Service program with periodic UL audits.
Core panel standardUL 508A (industrial control panels); NFPA 79 for industrial machinery; UL 698A for hazardous locations.
Component ruleComponents must be UL Listed or Recognized and applied within their ratings and conditions of acceptability. This is the defining constraint.
Fault currentSCCR calculated per Supplement SB, marked on the nameplate, and must meet or exceed available fault current at the installation.
EnclosureUL Type ratings (1, 3R, 4, 4X, 12) per UL 50/50E.
EvidenceThe label itself plus the shop's procedure file. No technical file is handed to the customer.
Cost shapeFront-loaded: shop listing, audits, and Listed components. Per-panel effort is low once the program exists.

CE / UKCA

EU / EEA · manufacturer self-declaration
Legal basisEU directives and regulations. CE marking is mandatory to place the product on the EU market — it is a legal declaration, not a certification body's opinion.
Who certifiesYou do. The manufacturer self-declares conformity for a control panel. No notified body for standard LVD/EMC scope.
Core panel standardEN/IEC 61439-1/-2 (assemblies); EN/IEC 60204-1 (electrical equipment of machines); EN 61000 series (EMC).
Component ruleComponents must suit the harmonized standard's requirements — but there is no Listed/Recognized gatekeeping. Manufacturer declarations and IEC ratings carry the design.
Fault currentIcc / Ipk verified per EN 61439 design verification (calculation, comparison with a tested reference design, or test) — a different route than SB.
EnclosureIP and IK ratings per IEC 60529 / 62262.
EvidenceTechnical File, risk assessment, verification records, and a signed Declaration of Conformity — retained 10 years and produced on demand.
Cost shapeBack-loaded: no listing fee, but real documentation effort on every design.
The dual-build trap: neither mark accepts the other. A CE-marked panel has no standing with a US AHJ, and a UL label means nothing to an EU market surveillance authority. Panels for both markets are designed to satisfy UL 508A and EN 61439 at once — dual-marked components, the stricter of the two spacing and conductor rules, both nameplate marking sets, and both evidence trails. Set the market toggle to BOTH to surface the divergence points in each standard's design procedure.

Component standards library

The major standards encountered in a UL 508A or EN 61439 panel. Open a card for scope, a numbered design procedure, key ratings, conditions of acceptability, and common pitfalls. Verify every component against its source — UL Product iQ for UL, the harmonized standard and manufacturer declaration for CE — before release.

Design checklist

Working checklist derived from the standards library, plus per-standard design-procedure progress. State lives in this session only — export the report to keep a filled-out copy.

SCCR worksheet — Supplement SB

List every component in the power circuit. The panel SCCR is the weakest link: the lowest-rated component in any power path caps the whole panel unless a tested combination or current-limiting device (noted in the notes column) raises that path. Control circuits behind proper protection or Class 2 sources are excluded per SB. Export to keep the filled worksheet.

Wire sizing & color code reference

Typical values for design — always verify against the current published table (UL 508A Table 28.1 / NEC 310.16) and your customer specification before release.

Enter a current to size the conductor.

Ampacity — 75 C Cu

Small-conductor OCPD limits still apply: 14 AWG to 15 A, 12 AWG to 20 A, 10 AWG to 30 A. Derate for ambient and bundling.

Conductor colors — UL vs IEC

UL 508A / NFPA 79 vs IEC/EN 60204-1 conventions. Circuits that remain energized with the disconnect OFF must be orange (or identified) and labeled.

UL Type to IP (approx.)

One-directional: a UL Type rating satisfies the listed IP, but an IP rating never proves a UL Type — Type testing covers corrosion, icing, oil, and gasket aging that IP does not.

Nameplate generator

Builds the UL 508A / EN 61439 marking plate. Fill the fields, pull the SCCR from the worksheet, and download as SVG (for engraving/label software) or PNG. Nothing is stored — the downloaded file is your copy.

Panel layout & build practice

Practical shop-floor checks for physically laying out and building the panel — the things that pass a drawing review but fail on the bench. Same session rules as the design checklist: state lives in this tab only — export the report to keep a filled-out copy.
